Lost your bearings? Head to the Cardinal Point
By Sally Pfeffer
When visitors drive up the winding path to Cardinal Point Vineyard
they get into the funky style and creativity of its owners. Since
this winery is family owned, the atmosphere is definitely relaxed
and come-as-you-are. The same creativity that Tim Gorman uses
in creating the wines spills over into the winery decor.
Cardinal Point is owned by Paul and Ruth Gorman. It was when
the couple was stationed at Bad Kreuznach, Germany, 30 years
ago that they discovered a passion for German wines — Spatleses,
Rieslings, Ausleses, all crafted with care in the little vineyards
surrounding the town. It was then they decided to add a vineyard
to their retirement plans.
In 1985, after retiring from the army, they moved to their family
farm in Afton, called Cardinal Point. The wineries name was derived
from the four points of the compass with the cardinal point being
their new beginning.
The winery produces a complete list of reds and whites. A favorite
for dessert wines is a delicious sweet combination of Riesling,
Gewürztraminer, Traminette and Viognier in what the family calls
Quatrro, 2004. This wine with flavors of apricot and pineapple
was the perfect compliment to the chocolate cake served for dessert
later that evening.
Cardinal Point is open from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and
Saturdays in January. During the months of February through December
the winery is open from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Closed on Thanksgiving,
Christmas, New Year’s Day and Easter.
Special events coming up at Cardinal Point Vineyard & Winery
include a Holiday Open House Nov. 25 through Dec. 4, 2005. Stop
by have some wine and enjoy the crafts and food. Feb. 11 and
12th mark the 2nd annual Cardinal Point & Rappahannock River
Oyster Festival. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Oysters and Cardinal
